Identity Theft-Protect Yourself

It’s a frightening fact that identity theft is a rampant crime that can happen to anyone, and scams against seniors are the most common form of fraud. Of the many methods used, the phone is the easiest and most common way to connect with unwary victims. To protect yourself follow these identity theft prevention tips:

• Do not give out personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
• Do not carry your Social Security or Medicare cards in your wallet.
• Cut up or, better yet, shred rarely used or unused credit cards.
• Research the authenticity of charities and other organizations before you donate money.
• Hang up on any phone calls requesting money or personal information.
• Sign up for the Do Not Call Registry. To add your number to the Registry, call 888-382-1222 from the phone you wish to register.
• Keep sensitive documents at home locked in a secure place.
• Use a cross-cutting shredder to destroy sensitive mail, such as bank statements, credit card solicitations, and other documents that contain any type of personal information before throwing them away.
• Opt out of receiving pre-screened offers based on your credit data.
• Get a locked mail box or a post office box.
• Regularly review your financial and credit records for signs of fraud.
• Become more aware of your surroundings.
